Hangzhou Medical College (HMC) is a full-time ordinary institute of higher learning officially accredited by the State Ministry of Education and People's Government of Zhejiang Province.
Hangzhou Medical College(HMC) is located in Hangzhou, which is a city entitled as " paradise on earth". It is a full-time public medical university sponsored by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is also the only medical university directly affiliated to Zhejiang Provincial Health Commission.
History: The predecessor of HMC was Zhejiang Provincial Women's Obstetrics School founded in 1925. It has passed through different names in more than 90 years history, such as Zhejiang Provincial Hangzhou Advanced Medical Vocational School, Hangzhou Health School of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial Health School, Zhejiang Medical College, etc., in 2016, it was upgraded to a medical university. It is one of the medical institutes in Zhejiang province who has the most majors related to primary-level medical and health services and health industry. The predecessor of the Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences was Hangzhou Institute of Tropical Diseases, founded in 1928. After the names as Zhejiang Experimental Health Institute, Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences, Zhejiang People’s Experimental Health Institute, etc., it was renamed as Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences in 1988. It is the largest public welfare comprehensive medical and health research institution in Zhejiang province. In 2019, the former Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences and the former Hangzhou Medical College merged to form the new Hangzhou Medical College.
Facilities: HMC currently has three campuses, locate in Lin'an, Binjiang and Huanglong respectively, and a Science and Technology Innovation Center in Qingshan Lake. The school covers an area of 124 acres, with a building area of 390,000 square meters. The existing teaching and scientific research equipment worth RMB 401 million. There are 1 provincial key experimental teaching demonstration center, 3 central financial supported training bases, 3 provincial model training bases, 2 provincial bases for college students off-campus practice in "13th Five-Year Plan", 1 provincial model base of integration of production and education, and 1 production and education integration project. We have more than 20 authoritative professional databases (home and abroad) including the full text resources of the National Science and Technology Library. HMC has 1 directly affiliated hospital (Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital), 13 non-directly affiliated hospitals, and 172 off-campus practical teaching bases.
Faculty: There are more than 1,000 faculty and staff in the university, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Some of the faculty were awarded various titles, such as National Talents for "Hundred, Thousand, Thousand Talents Project", young and middle-aged experts with outstanding national contributions, scientific and technological innovation leader in the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", national young and middle-aged health experts with outstanding contributions, State Council special grant winners, young scientific and technological innovation leader in the Innovative Talent Promotion Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Zhejiang Province, and Qianjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor of Provincial Colleges and Universities, provincial "Ten Thousand Talents Program" outstanding talents, scientific and technological innovation leaders of provincial "Ten Thousand Talents Program", young top talents of provincial "Ten Thousand Talents Program", talents of provincial "New Century 151 Talent Project", renowned teaching teacher in provincial colleges and universities, and provincial health leaders etc..
Disciplines: There are 8,700 full-time college students, including undergraduates, and postgraduates. There are three first-level master's programs in basic medicine, public health and preventive medicine, and pharmacy. We have 1 national key clinical specialty in clinical nursing; 4 provincial-level first-class disciplines in clinical medicine, basic medicine, pharmacy, public health and preventive medicine (Category B); 2 key medical disciplines in Zhejiang Province, including minimally invasive surgery and biomedicine. We also have 17 department-level key disciplines (supporting disciplines, innovative disciplines), including pathogenic molecular biology, labor hygiene, nutrition, genetic engineering of laboratory animals, pharmacy, clinical pathology, general surgery (hepatopancreatobiliary), and laboratory diagnostics etc..
HMC has 18 undergraduate majors covering 10 categories of specialties, including clinical medicine, stomatology, public health and preventive medicine, pharmacy, forensic medicine, medical technology, nursing, physics, electronic information, and biological sciences. In the meantime, we also have 9 junior-college (higher vocational) majors including clinical medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and medical laboratory technology etc. It has 2 national-level first-class professional construction sites, 2 central financial supported professional construction projects, 1 national pilot project of "Distinguished Doctor Education Plan"(first-batch), 5 provincial-level first-class professional construction sites, 2 provincial-level specialties in “the 13th Five-Year Plan”, and 7 provincial-level characteristic specialties.
Talent Cultivation: In the long history, a large number of alumni came out of HMC who are outstanding both in their moral integrity and professional excellence, willing to dedication, and receive wide-ranging reputation, including the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. The rich campus culture, advanced teaching facilities and increasingly extensive cooperation and exchanges have created good conditions for students’ growth and development. The year-end employment rate of graduates in the past three years has reached over 96%.
Scientific Research and Social Services: In HMC, there are 7 provincial key laboratories (laboratory animals and safety evaluation, medical bioengineering vaccine research and development, drug safety evaluation technology research, gastroenterology, tumor molecular diagnosis and individualized treatment, neuropsychiatric drug research, endocrine gland disease diagnosis and treatment research), 1 provincial engineering laboratory (diagnosis and treatment, drug research and development of gastrointestinal tumors), 1 post-doctoral research workstation. In the past five years (2016-2020), we have obtained 549 scientific research projects (provincial/ministerial level or higher), including 126 national scientific research projects, 19 awards for achievements (provincial and ministerial level or higher), and 345 national authorized patents. More than 500 papers are published annually in academic journals. We publish 3 academic journals, "International Journal of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases", "Zhejiang Practical Medicine", and "Zhejiang Medical Education".
There are also some bases and platforms as WHO helminthiasis research cooperation center, WHO human reproduction research cooperation center, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) fully accredited institution, national preservation center for hepatitis A live attenuated vaccine virus species, national practicing physician (public health) ) practical skill examiner training and examination base, designated unit for medical and health science and technology project novelty consultation (Ministry of Health), Drug GLP Center (National Food and Drug Administration), Construction Project on Occupational Disease Hazard Evaluation Agency (Class A qualification) (Ministry of Emergency Management), Chemical Toxicity Appraisal Agency (Level B Qualification) (Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention), Zhejiang Schistosomiasis Control Center, Zhejiang Provincial New Drug (Chinese Herb) Research and Development Center, Zhejiang Laboratory Animal Center, Zhejiang Laboratory Animal Management Office, Zhejiang Primary Health Research Center, Zhejiang Pharmaceutical Policy Research Center, Zhejiang Provincial Occupational Disease Prevention and Training Center, Zhejiang Medical Literature Search Center, Zhejiang Health Care Guidance Center for Schools, Zhejiang Rural Doctor Training School, Zhejiang Community Nurse Training Center, Zhejiang Provincial Laboratory Animal Public Service Platform, Zhejiang Provincial Service Platform for New Drug Creation Technology, Zhejiang Science and Technology Literature Resource Sharing and Co-Construction Platform, and Zhejiang Large-Scale Scientific Instrument and Equipment Coordination and Sharing Platform.
International Exchanges and Cooperation: HMC adheres to open and cooperative education. We run a joint program on health information management with California Baptist University (USA). We further developed the exchange and cooperation with the World Health Organization, Harvard University School of Public Health, University of Southern California, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), University of Shizuoka, and other institutions. We explore the exchanges and cooperation with countries and regions along the “Belt and Road”, and signed a memorandum of cooperation on schistosomiasis prevention and control. We also established cooperation with University of Maryland, State University of New York at Buffalo, Georgia State University, Thomas Jefferson University in the United States, and Western University of Health Sciences in the United States to conduct academic and cultural exchange activities such as postgraduate training, teacher exchanges, and student exchanges, and continuously improve the level of international schooling.
Aims of Development: The new era is endowed with new missions, and the new journey calls for new responsibilities. Hangzhou Medical College will closely focus on Zhejiang's "two high-level" construction goals, fully implement the fundamental task of “Foster Virtue through Education”, cultivate high-quality applied medical talents with humanistic care concepts, truth-seeking spirit and international vision, to build a teaching and research coordinated, industry-university-research integrated high-level applied medical university with distinct characteristics and unique advantages. We will give a full play to the development advantages after the merger of the school and the academy, oriented to the industry of health and medicine, adhere to innovative development, connotative development, coordinated development, characteristic development and open development, continuously improve the level and strength of school running, strive to run a higher medical education satisfactory to the people, and provide talent and intellectual support for the aims of “Province with Powerful Higher Education” and “Health in China”.
