    Introduction to Hangzhou Medical College

     

    Hangzhou Medical College is a full-time public undergraduate medical school for public service directly under the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, which is managed by the Health Commission of Zhejiang Province.

     

    History

    With over 90 years of history, Hangzhou Medical College was founded in 1925 as Zhejiang Provincial Women's Obstetrics School. The school has since gone through different stages with names as follows: Hangzhou Advanced Medical Vocational School of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou Health School of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Provincial Health School, and Zhejiang Medical College. In 2016, it was promoted to a public undergraduate medical university.

    On the other hand, Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences, at its inception in 1928, was known as the Hangzhou Institute of Tropical Diseases. It has also gone through different stages with names as follows: Zhejiang Health Experiment Institute, Academy of Medical Science of Zhejiang, Zhejiang People's Health Experiment Institute, and Zhejiang Medical Research Institute. In 1987, the institution was renamed as Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences.

    In 2019, the former Zhejiang Academy of Medical Sciences and the former Hangzhou Medical College merged to form the new Hangzhou Medical College.

     

    Resources

    With four campuses in Lin'an, Huanglong, Binjiang, and Qingshanhu, Hangzhou Medical College covers an area of about 957,175 square meters with a gross building area of 403,600 square meters. It possesses teaching and scientific research instruments valued at CNY¥412 million as well as more than 20 domestic and foreign authoritative databases. The school has one directly affiliated hospital (Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital), 14 indirectly affiliated hospitals, and over 200 off-campus practical teaching and training bases.

    Academic Disciplines

    Hangzhou Medical College aims to strengthen the construction of application-oriented disciplines and specialties with medicine as the main focus, while also developing the integration of multiple disciplines such as science and engineering.     Hangzhou Medical College has established:

    ·        8 province key laboratories focusing on the follow topics: Lab Animal and Safety Evaluation, R&D for Biomedical Engineering-Based Vaccine, Drug Safety Evaluation Technology Research, Gastroenterology, Tumor Molecular Diagnostics and Individualized Treatment, Neuropsychiatric Drug Research, Endocrine Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Research, and Biomarker and In-Vitro Diagnostics and Conversion;  

    ·        4 provincial engineering research laboratories: Gastrointestinal tumor diagnosis, treatment, and drug development; research and development of new vaccines; key techniques of inspection and diagnosis; digital intelligent rehabilitation equipment

    ·        1 postdoctoral research station;

    ·        18 science and technology service bases and platforms including: National Medical Products Administration GLP Drug Center certified institution, National Preservation Center for Live Attenuated Hepatitis A Virus Vaccine Strains, Zhejiang Schistosomiasis Control Center, and Zhejiang Laboratory Animal Management Office, among others.

    Since 2018, Hangzhou Medical College has obtained 567 research projects at provincial, ministerial, and national levels, including 178 national research projects. Other achievements include:

    ·        15 awards for projects at provincial, ministerial, and national levels;

    ·        1,061 patents authorized by the national administration;

    ·        Over 500 research papers published in renowned domestic and international journals each year;

    ·        Journals published and distributed such as International Journal of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases, Zhejiang Practical Medicine, and Zhejiang Medical Education.

     

    International Cooperation and Exchange

    Adhering to an open and cooperative education policy, Hangzhou Medical College has facilitated international cooperation with 17 world-renowned universities such as Georgia State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States as well as the University of the West of England, University of South Wales, and Ulster University in the United Kingdom to promote international exchange and to broaden students’ international horizons. The university has also established cooperative relationships with Georgia State University and other institutions of higher education to promote the construction of overseas training platforms for the teaching staff, while also building links with international experts and professors from countries like Portugal, Romania, and Japan to facilitate the the internationalization of the university’s faculty. Academic exchange and collaboration have also been strengthened with international organizations and prestigious universities such as the World Health Organization, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, University of Maryland, and University of Southern California. To explore the ways through which exchange and cooperation can be realized with countries and regions along the Belt and Road to continuously improve the internationalization of education, Hangzhou Medical College has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control. At present, the university has become a member of international platforms such as "Belt and Road" International Medical Education Alliance (BRIMEA), China Education Association for International Exchange, China-CEEC Higher Education Institutions Consortium, and China Association of Higher Education Branch of the Importation of Intelligence from Abroad, and the level of internationalization of the university has been significantly improved.
