    The founding period

Zhejiang Provincial Women’s Obstetrics School was established in 1925. After the Opium War, the British set up Guangji Medical and Pharmaceutical School in Hangzhou in 1881. In the aftermath of the May Thirtieth Movement, some patriotic teachers and students established a separate school which later became Zhejiang Provincial Women’s Obstetrics School. Zheng Qi was the president.

    War period

After the Sino-Japanese War broke out, the school had to move to Yongjia in November 1937, later to Linhai in August 1938 and after that to Tiantai. When the school moved back to Hangzhou in the spring of 1946, it had midwifery, nursing, pharmacy and health programs.

After liberation and before reform and opening

In the latter half of 1952, the name of the school was changed into Hangzhou Health School of Zhejiang Province. The school overhauled its programs, with obstetrics and nursing being split off.  In 1956, the school moved to the previous location of Zhejiang University. In September 1960, the school was reestablished as Hangzhou Medical College. The then-president of Chinese Academy of Sciences wrote for the inscription of the school name. The school offered medical care, health, Chinese medicine and pharmacy programs, as well as four secondary school programs of pharmacy, medical inspection, radiology, and health. In 1962, the school changed its name to Hangzhou Health School. Soon after that, the Ministry of Health put the school on a list of eight schools with which it kept close contact. During the cultural revolution, the operation of the school was halted. In October 1974, the school resumed operation and was renamed Zhejiang Health School.

After reform and before independent establishment

After China’s economic reform and opening, under the educational guiding principle of the CPC Central Committee, the school’s development gained momentum. In August, the provincial government decided to merge Zhejiang Health School and Zhejiang Health Cadres’ Further Education School. The new school assumed responsibility to provide secondary vocational programs and train cadres. New facilities were up and running. A Huaxia Building of 3,000 sq. m., a 4,459 sq. m. teaching building, a 5,000 sq. m. lab building, and a 6664 sq. m. student apartment changed the old campus beyond recognition. In 1993, the school was named provincial key school by the government.

After independent establishment to the present
